What the Table Teaches You

Traluno could have been a god-game on an infinite plane. Putting the layout on a wooden table in a hobby room, seen from standing height, decided almost everything that came after.

The first decision in a building game is what the player is. Most of them answer "a god": you float above an infinite plane, the camera drops to whatever height you scroll to, and the world extends until the hardware complains.

Traluno answers differently. You are a person standing at the front edge of a wooden table in a hobby room, at the eye height of someone who is about 1.75 metres tall. The layout is HO scale. The room has walls, a window and a door. When you walk, you walk on carpet.

That sounds like flavour. It is actually the constraint that settled a dozen later arguments before they started.

A table has edges, and edges are a design gift

An infinite plane has no composition. Every direction is the same direction, and the only way to make one part of the world matter more than another is to put something expensive in it.

A table has a front, a back and two sides. The front edge is where you stand, so it is the most-looked-at strip of the whole layout, which is exactly why the control desk lives there and not in a menu. The back edge is where the mountain goes, because a mountain at the back reads as distance and a mountain at the front reads as a wall. The corners are awkward, and awkward corners are a genuine puzzle for a player to solve rather than a bug to fix.

None of that had to be invented. It comes free with the table, and every real modeller already knows it.

Eye height decides what a building is for

Standing at the front edge, your eye is roughly a metre above the tabletop. In HO that is about eighty-seven scale metres — you are a giant looking down at a small town from a low aircraft.

At that angle you see roofs. You see roofs far more than you see walls, and almost never see a ground-floor door unless you deliberately crouch.

So roofs get the detail budget. Ridge tiles, chimneys, dormers, the slight colour shift where one roof plane catches more light than another. Ground-floor shopfronts got built early and then quietly deprioritised, because the honest answer to "how often will a player see this?" was "when they go looking".

The same logic runs the other way for vehicles. A car is small enough that from standing height you read its silhouette and nothing else. That is why road vehicles are smooth single shapes rather than stacks of cubes: at the size they occupy on screen, a voxelised car reads as a lump of scenery instead of a car.

Scale makes the physics arguments short

Every "should this be possible?" question in a normal building game turns into a taste debate. In a model railway, HO scale answers most of them with a number.

Can a train cross that gap without a bridge? No, and the reason is not that we decided it looked bad — it is that the span is nine scale metres of unsupported rail.

Can the mountain sit over the track? Yes, and it has to carve a tunnel bore through itself where it does, because that is what a mountain does to a railway.

How tall can an overhead structure be before a train hits it? The tallest vehicle is the electric locomotive with its pantograph raised. That is a measurement, not an opinion, and everything spanning the track is checked against it. The harbour crane was braced at exactly train height in its first version, and the wagons drove through the bracing, and there was no debate about whether that was wrong.

Constraints that come from the subject matter are the cheapest constraints you will ever get. Nobody has to defend them.

The room is not decoration

It would have been easy to render the table against a flat colour and call it done. The room earns its cost in two ways.

It gives the light somewhere to come from. Day and night are driven by a window, not by a global slider, so at dusk the lit side of the layout is the side facing the window and the shadow falls the way a shadow in a room falls. A sky gradient with no room around it looks like a screensaver.

And it gives the layout a size. A table in a room is obviously a table — you can see how much floor it does not cover. The moment you buy a second table and the room gets tighter, the thing you have built acquires a scale you can feel. On an infinite plane, doubling the world changes nothing at all, because the world was never bounded to begin with.

What it costs

Honesty demands the other column. The table costs you the thing every infinite-plane game gets for free: unlimited room.

Players run out of space, and running out of space feels bad. The answer — buy another table — is a real answer, but it is also a paywall standing exactly where the fun was. That tension is not resolved, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. It is the single sharpest edge in the whole design, and it exists because of the decision described above.

We think it is still the right trade. A bounded world you can fill is a world you can finish, and finishing something is a feeling an endless plane cannot give you.
